Fast searching and editing abbreviations

If you're looking for an item that contains a specific text fragment—either in the abbreviation or the expansion—Typinator offers several powerful ways to search and navigate your sets.

Using the search field in the Typinator window

  1. Open the Typinator window.

  2. Enter your desired text in the search field (e.g., typing dear will help you locate a letter template).

  3. The right-hand column in the set list will show how many items match your search.

  4. Click a set to display all matching items within it.

Navigating search results

  • After entering your search term, press the Return or Enter key to jump to the first match.

  • Press Return/Enter again to move to the next result.

  • Press Shift + Return/Enter to jump backward through the results.

Searching multiple words

When you enter multiple words, Typinator will search for all items containing both words, in any order.

  • Example: Typing special offer will match entries that contain both “special” and “offer”, regardless of their position.

To search for an exact phrase (with the words in the same order, separated by a space), wrap the phrase in quotation marks:

  • Example: "special offer" will only return items where the words appear together exactly like that.

Using quick search

For even faster access and without opening the Typinator window before:

  1. Press your Quick Search hotkey (which you can define by your own in the Typinator Settings).

  2. Start typing your search term or press a blank for the last used items to appear.

Typinator will instantly show a list of matching items.

Editing a matching item

If you'd rather want to edit an item than insert it:

  • Select the item in the list.

  • Press Command + Return/Enter.

Typinator will open the editing window and highlight the selected item in the abbreviation list.
