How to create and manage abbreviation sets in Typinator

Typinator lets you organize your abbreviations into different sets for easier management. You can create new sets, use built-in ones, and move or copy abbreviations between them. This helps keep your text expansions structured and easy to use.

Types of sets

Typinator has two types of sets, shown under separate headings in the set list:

  • Abbreviation sets contain simple rules that turn short abbreviations into longer text or pictures.
  • Regular expression sets use patterns to define what text should trigger an expansion.

Creating sets

To create a new set, click the “+” button below the list and choose the type of set you want Abbreviations or Regular expressions.
To rename a set, double-click its name.

You can also choose “New Predefined Set” to add one of Typinator’s built-in sets that are ready to use. Check out our “Extensions, extras & more” webpage and download whatever you need.

Moving abbreviations between sets

Typinator allows you to easily reorganize your abbreviations by moving or copying them between sets.

How to move a single abbreviation

To move an abbreviation to another set:

  1. Select the abbreviation in the list.

  2. Drag and drop it onto the desired set in the sidebar.

How to move multiple abbreviations

You can move multiple items at once using keyboard shortcuts:

  • To select individual items: Hold the Command (⌘) key and click each abbreviation you want to move.

  • To select a range: Click the first item, then hold Shift and click the last item.

Once selected, drag the group to the destination set in the sidebar.

Copy instead of move

If you want to make a copy of the selected abbreviation(s) instead of moving them:

  • Hold the Option (Alt) key while dragging to the destination set.

  • This will duplicate the items, keeping them in both sets.
